Second Eye Surgery, spirit

14-second video: No pain at all today. Yee-haaa!

An attitude of gratitude is powerful medicine. And, no prescription needed.

In college a couple drinking buddies loved Jimmy Buffett. Could never understand why.

A few years later, at the University of Idaho, i had a bartending job.

The radio only played country music because Moscow, Idaho didn’t have a Rock station.

The owner had two cassette tapes. Can’t recall what the second one was, but the first one was “Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes”.

Before i became a Country music fan, Buffett’s tape was the go-to playlist. Constantly, it seems in retrospect. Etched in my soul i guess.

Fell in love with the vibe.

Buffett’s songs reminded me of Florida, palm trees, the ocean, and sunshine.

Next thing you know, i’m in a Washington State University (WSU) (Go Cougs) record shop and went to the album bin that started with B and found a couple Jimmy Buffett albums.

Don’t recall which album was my first, but i quickly wore it out, playing it constantly and being mesmerized by Buffett’s style.

Before you know it, i owned everything he released. In 1983 that was 10 albums.

Note: We lived on WSU’s campus in an all-women dorm. Cheryl was a Residense Hall Director and lived on-site. It’s where we lived a year before and a year after we married. Eight miles across the state line, i attended University of Idaho and worked at a novel hot-tub rental business with a beer and wine bar.

6-second video: Driving deep in. Fifty years ago on this same road, in a chartered bus with 50 Scouts and chaperones, almost dark and no distinguishable landscape features visible until the next morning.

i love the privilege of daily blogging on five uniquely different topics.

Being in uncharted territory is a prime example of opposites.

On one side, uncharted territory is an immense opportunity.

On the other side, uncharted territory could be your demise.

My advice…

  • Have fun
  • .think .differently
  • Lean into discomfort

Scariest animal encounter

Video context:

  • First and foremost, safety takes a back seat to nothing. Never get this close to wild animals.
  • Spent nearly five hours hiking to Mountain Pass (7,600′), enjoying lunch, relaxing
  • Sun will soon be out of sight
  • Car is five miles away
  • Been hiking in Grizzly Bear country for 50 years
  • We are alone on the mountain Pass, late September
  • i miraculously spot a bear 800 meters from the Pass
  • The bear is 10-15 meters from trail
  • Trail is the only way to safely pass the bear to return to car
  • As we hike down, we become blind to Bear’s location
  • We clear small forrest and see the Bear
  • Without hesitation, our only choice is obvious to me
  • We must get past the bear or risk being trapped
  • Once Sun disappears behind Continental Divide, it gets cold quickly
  • There is no safe way to pass if we attempt off-trail route
  • Trusted my gut from 50 years of wilderness experience
  • We talk loud so the Bear knows we are coming, to avoid surprise
  • Bear is foraging in a hole it dug, eyes “buried”, we quickly pass
  • We walk (never run) far down the trail, peering back often
  • We pause, grateful to be on the car side of trail
  • In this moment, i sense something for first time in half a century
  • Bear is focused on eating, not us
  • We observe Bear is a surreal encounter
  • Scariest animal encounter ever, and also the most incredible
  • Finally, this is absolutely the most dangerous position to be in. NEVER think for a moment that you can safely do what we just did
  • i know i will be a fool to think this would ever be safe in the future. You should too.
