This is not a life-sentence by being highly structured

sanibel sunrise
In the midst of an amazing Sanibel Island sunrise yesterday…

sanibel rainbow
…i remembered to do a 180-degree turnaround. As i watched and photographed the rainbow, i saw a man with a big camera step onto the beach and walk toward me. He was so captivated by the firey-red glow of sunrise behind me, the rainbow evaded him.

Being focused and disciplined with our habits and rituals doesn’t sentence us to a life lacking in spontaneity and fun.

Quite the opposite.

We are able to take what unexpectedly crosses our path and use healthy improvisation to do something we’ve never (or rarely) done before.

This is exciting, fun, and often provides joy where and when we didn’t expect.

What many never experience and therefore can’t correlate is that wellness attracts, facilitates and enhances spontaneity.

Who knew?

Focus and discipline

thank you note
Yesterday on LinkedIn. Holiday season? Halloween is in seven days. Boo!

Focus and discipline.

Do you have an architecture for creating spiritual vibrancy?

One that scales daily, without exception?

Discipline

inspiring friend
Mike helps us with home improvement projects. His wife and my wife work together at Disney. Photo: yesterday after i walked home from the gym.

Just like going to the gym, or going running or biking, you need daily discipline to focus on your spirit.

Mike (above) and i had a deep, yet casual conversation about life and death.

A few years back, Mike was one of two people in a group of 11 who survived cancer treatment.

His cancer is back.

Mike has two choices.

He can opt to not have his ear removed, and die sooner than later.

Or…

He can have his ear removed, along with a big patch of the side of his face – down to the bone. A patch from his leg will be removed to reconstruct what’s taken from his face. Remove a couple teeth, reroute glands, nerves, etc.

He joked about his conversations with his Doctors who discussed prosthetic ear options.

Mike suggested a Star Trek Vulcan ear, so he can say he’s half Vulcan, like Spock.

Or, how about an on/off switch for when he’s near his wife.

His courage, faith, and perspective inspire me.

He’s an Army veteran.

He knows all too well how fragile and ugly llife is and how all we can do is make choices and move forward.

Consistently thinking this way requires a learned and applied discipline.

My advice to is this: learn it and apply it.

No one will notice and this is dangerous

Sandhill Cranes in Florida neighborhood

Self-discipline is key to everything we do.

Prayer daily often requires self-discipline because of life’s constant distractions – no one will know if we don’t do it.

This can become a dangerous habit.

A habit as dangerous as not exercising regularly.

Although that can be more difficult to keep a secret.
