The meadow

black eyed susans in Orlando
Photo: yesterday returning from the gym. It started with me scattering a few seeds in the grass many years ago.

The meadow has been part of my vision for our home since we moved in January 25, 1992.

Over the years there have been various iterations of “The Meadow”.

This version is the result of me asking our yard maintainence crew to not mow a specific backyard section for a couple months.

A vision is lofty, hard to articulate, and you probably don’t say it the exact same way twice; it may also be impossible.

When i scattered some black-eyed susan seeds in the grass a decade ago, what do you think i saw?

In the back of your mind

1-10 written on a post-it note
On a 10 scale with 10 as high, how much truth do you want today?

In the back of your mind, be preparing for living in a nursing home.

What?

Not joking.

All the cleaning and purging: recycling, donating, and trashing – all of it is highly motivating, for me, because i’m preparing for worst-case scenario – a nursing home.

i have lived in an assisted-living facility for about 2-3 weeks a year for four years. Simultaneously on these numerous multi-night stays, i spent many hours in the adjacent 24-hour nursing care facility.

You get a small medical bed, a small closet, and half a room. You may or may not have a one-toilet bathroom with no shower in your room, if you are mobile enough to use it independently.

What you can do with half a single nursing home room is sparse at best.

Bottom line, you won’t have much room.

Start downsizing your non-essentials.

If you like to travel and like to travel light, this is the same concept.

There’s an unreasonable and unnecessary fear of “running out”

personal sketch of Florida home
Years ago, a neighbor had note cards made for us as a gift, featuring a hand-drawn image of our home.

Have had a box of these note cards – with a hand-drawn sketch of our home – for about 20 years.

i rarely use them because they’re so special and unique.

There’s an unreasonable and unnecessary fear of “running out” of these cards.

To which the me of 2018 says, “So what?”

Enclosing a cash gratuity with a thank you note for a couple who help us out twice a month.

Can’t wait to run out of these cards.

What do you protect and how do you protect it?

Blink XT camera
Arrived yesterday. Blink offers features others brands don’t. Small, battery-powered, wireless, outdoor-proof, motion detection, etc, etc.

facebook breach
Last night…breaking news. Watched the ABC Evening News recording about an hour after the live broadcast.

Facebook breach
Thumbs down?

Facebook breach
What once seemed invincible…

What do you protect and how do you protect it?

Home security – including motion alerts, from anywhere, at any time.

Personal data security – all of our data – calls, location, friends, messages, etc, etc.

Spiritual security – this week between Palm Sunday (two days ago) and Easter Sunday – is the Holiest week of the year for Christians.

Are we consciously protecting our spiritual assets?

You know, peace, comfort, compassion, patience, generosity, faith, hope, forgiveness, and gratitude.

Ain’t no app for that, no security cameras, nor any digital software to protect our spirit.

We resist and fear change automatically

Homeowner meeting
Controversy and fear of change. Vacant land near our community has most people worried about change.

Looking across the lake we share with Walt Disney World.

Sundays are a traditional “church-day” for many Americans.

Yet there’s decent media coverage that church attendance is declining.

Lots of “justifiable reasons” for only going to Church on Easter and Christmas Sundays.

We didn’t go yesterday.

Why?

“Justifiable reasons”.

Which leads me here…

We resist and fear change automatically.

The change that has engulfed our 70-acre neighborhood the past decade is best described as an urban-growth tsunami.

Similar to what New York City looked like before Christopher Columbus discovered America and what it looks like now.

In a 15-mile by two-mile north-to-south corridor along State Road 535, there was nothing here but wilderness.

It has all been aggressively developed.

No more open space.

But there is one spot that is sparsely populated.

We are in a rare 200-acre part of Orange County that has homes zoned from one home per two acres to one per 10-acres.

There’s pressure to change this.
