He’s only human

Particularly tough reading coming up this Sunday.

So tough in fact, the temptation to request a substitute (reserved for when you’re sick or on vacation) has crossed my mind more than once.

Why exactly?

The scripture is “like speaking in tongues”.

The whole section in Galatians Chapter two makes sense, but the reading is only a snippet. So context and framing aren’t possible.

It will be entirely up to voice tone, pace, and pauses in order to make it work.

And what many don’t realize, the preparation for that, in and of itself, is a lot of work.

Note to jeff (me whispering to me): “Hey dude, it’s what you signed up for.”

But will the congregation feel it?

Orlando sunrise from home office
Every morning is the same – two hours of self-reflection, and preparation.

Will my reading in two hours be filled with the Holy Spirit?

Of course.

But.

But will the congregation feel it?

Thinking it and doing it are two different things.

The intense preparation is invisible to the audience. And i am a mere human trying to express God’s Holy Words.

How do you take 60 seconds of reading words on a page and have everyone in the building feel the presence of God in a remarkable way?

You’ll never get in trouble if you make this kind of mistake

Catholic Lectors
Have never heard a Lector do this – reading something recommended from Lectorprep.org.

You’ll never get in trouble for making a mistake while trying to do the right thing.

It was that way at Disney, if you had a great leader. Not sure how it plays out in the Catholic Church.

Note: i did as the note above suggests. Hours later, an email asking me to not do it again. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

PS. Several Parishioners told me immediately after Mass that the context was important and that it helped them understand the reading.

When she began to cry, i realized something profound

Catholic Mass
It’s been 15 years since i sat front and center.

After 8:45am Mass, i randomly crossed paths with her and said, “Grace, your reading today stirred my soul. Being a reader myself, it is ridiculously easy to rush through a long reading. You did not. i closed my eyes and let God’s Holy words wash over me.”

When she began to cry, i realized something profound. Small acts of kindness have the power to move people.

This morning’s reading is challenging

Florida Hospital Winter Garden construction photo
Last week at the construction site for a new hospital. Construction is not a perfect science. Neither is life.

This morning’s reading is challenging. And there will be roughly 1,000 people listening and watching. Going through the motions would be easy. It’s only 40 seconds worth of reading.

Do these 40 seconds stand a chance against everything else each parishioner has coming at them this week?

Read like you mean it.
