My classmate’s Son is in People Magazine’s special 2012 year end issue

My classmate’s Son is in People Magazine’s special 2012 year end issue. It’s the 48-page issue featuring the 26 Americans killed at Sandy Hook elementary on the cover: Newtown Tragedy: Unbearable Loss. Enduring Love.

Last night (Dec 21) Mitch Stambaugh (my Spring Grove, PA class of 1977 HS classmate) posted on Facebook that his Son, Cameron, was in People Magazine. So I wrote… and Mitch replied…

  • Jeff Noel Mitch, it still makes me cry thinking about this. Sorry. I should man up. But it’s hard. Too close to home maybe.
Mitchell Stambaugh There hasn’t been a day without tears, Jeff. But each day seems to get a little better, not alot but a little is better than none. Thanks for ur kindness.

Five months before Sandy Hook Elementary became a household name, on July 8, 2012 at 8pm, a deadly roadside bomb blasted an American armored vehicle killing six American soldiers form Fort Bliss’ 978th Military Police Company.

Today’s money post is about the antidote for playing it safe, here.

Four things occupying space in my heart from Sandy Hook

two kids climbing on their Dad's legs
these children wouldn’t let their Dad alone as he was taking pictures of his Boy Scout son

Have purposely avoided all media exposure from this past week – since Sandy Hook Elementary School made world news. Why? Four reasons:

  1. I never (ever) want to know the name of the killer – it gains me us nothing
  2. The world is full of horrific, tragic events – every. single. day.
  3. Compassion fatigue from #2
  4. The worry that too soon, our Connecticut wakeup call simply becomes an annual day of remembrance

Why did the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy happen?

A church Christmas show about Christmas without Christ
last night the Christmas show brought tears to my eyes, just three days after Sandy Hook

Why did the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy happen a few days ago?

I don’t know.

No one can say for sure.

They can’t.

And even if a note is found (and maybe there has), and the killer wrote a reason, are we really going to believe it to be the gospel truth?

Seriously?

And here’s my first take after only three days since the tragedy:

  • may overwhelming love comfort the Families directly and indirectly impacted
  • may the media stop feeding the frenzy and hysteria of negativity, and blame
  • may everyone pause, for longer than we have in years, and look in the mirror
  • may we ask ourselves to be this concerned over the small, unrecognizable, daily tragedies in that mirror
  • may people reading this have the patience to figure out what I just said…

to be continued…
