Quietly, we’ve reached 15 years

Odds are high you won’t have time to watch this TED Talk.

Yet know i felt the same “i don’t have time nor interest right now” feeling.

If you become an exception and watch (like i just did), odds are high you won’t finish (i did finish, but doubted i would).

There’s a point where the TED Talk’s silence will unnerve you.

Becoming unnerved is a glorious place.

Why?

It challenges you in uncomfortable ways.

Lean into discomfort.

Discomfort exists to help things grow: people, processes, places.

Today starts the 15th year of prolific writing.

Five daily, differently-themed blog posts.

Four leap years at 366 days each plus 10 years at 365 days each.

That’s 5,114 consecutive days.

Five differently-themed blog posts a day.

That’s 25,570 published blog posts.

Shhhh.

Don’t tell anyone.

Simple reminder, self-mastery

hinderances to self mastery
The next image is an 18-minute TED Talk. i invested 18 minutes and found the investment a wise choice.

Watched yesterday morning.

Worth the 18 minutes.The 5 hindrances to self-mastery.

  1. Pleasure
  2. Aversion
  3. Dullness
  4. Restlessness
  5. Doubt

Have an insatiable desire to live in the moment with constant peace and contentment.

Or don’t.

It’s totally up to us.

Give for pleasure

Doing a repetitive job as our main focus is boring, eventually, and rather quickly, actually. At Disney we capitalize on the discretionary efforts of every employee – making others happy by going the extra-inch makes the giver happy too.

Give for pleasure. When i teach about going the extra inch to exceed customer expectations, it can, and if it suits you should, be done selfishly for pleasure.

At the end of the day, employees should have no option except this one – to deliver the wow-factor.

What is generous, is for an individual as CEO of You Inc, to pick from whatever lights your motivational fire.

Motivated to do it for altruistic reasons? Perfect.

Motivated because in the giving you receive? Great.

Motivated simply for the pleasure it brings you? Wonderful.

Serve so others benefit, especially yourself.

Social media

TEDx Boca Raton had an audience participation station in the reception lobby – a giant iPhone and everyone was encouraged to take a selfie. This is a photo of it happening in real time.

Social media as the claim was made in one of yesterday’s TEDx Talks:

Social media is making us less social.

TEDx Speaker

i disagree.

Social media has made us less personal when we are face to face.

yours truly

When we are alone, social media has made us exponentially more social.

yours truly (again)

Ultimately, like nutrition, exercise, and rest, it comes down to our motivation to be wise about our choices.

Who’s feeling compelled to argue that social media is killing our relationships? Many.

Who’s feeling compelled to argue that being inactive is killing our bodies? Only a handful (like yours truly).

Ain’t no glamour on the road

On the flight from Kuwait to Dubai…posted to TEDxAUK Instagram.
High School Seniors
While i missed being there Saturday night as our Son and his friends had dinner at our home, i remain content for being at all the other dinners they’ve shared at our place. After dinner, they went to Universal Studios for Grad Night.
Emirates delayed bag form
i begged them not to confiscate the bead jar.
Florida homesite
Had the airport car service drop me off at neighborhood entrance and i walked home from there. Entering our back yard is an indescribably peaceful experience.

Ain’t no glamour on the road.

The effort required to make it back home from Kuwait was anything but joyful.

The world isn’t perfect, of course.

Sometimes, it’s not even excellent.

Then i remind myself that whatever is irritating me is only a first-world problem and i immediately return to a peaceful and grounded state of being.

Son, when you learn to recognize that your biggest “issues” are trivial compared to many people’s issues, you will find a peace and contentment that allows you to thrive.

Having an incurable disease is a huge lifetime challenge. The good news is you live in America with access to the best the medical world can offer.
