Gradually, we see a broader view of our world

The juxtaposition of not having enough food versus having to “Loosen your belt” is striking – and perhaps, wrong. We spontaneously stopped for breakfast on the way home from volunteering.

After 16 years of delivering Food For Families on the mornings of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter, the purpose is finally starting to bloom. Our son (now 15) is gradually having a broader view of the world and can tangibly realize that helping people in need is a good and decent thing to do.

Delivering Food For Families this Thanksgiving morning

Epcot parking lot row marker
So coincidental that we parked in this row (16, as in the number of volunteer years) at Epcot yesterday.

Delivering Food For Families this Thanksgiving morning. We began doing this in 1999, the year before our son was born. We then did it on Christmas morning 1999, and Easter morning 2000. Those are the three times each year it’s offered.

Our son was born later that year, 2000, and we’ve been doing this three times a year for 16 years.

Each of the 48 mornings seem so insignificant by themselves.

Note: We missed this past Christmas due to a Family visit in Pennsylvania.

The Pareto principle for volunteering

Windermere Prep dog mascot, Willow
Yesterday morning, during an 8-mile run…ran past the High School administration office. Willow (the dog), is the Headmaster’s pet.

The Pareto principle for volunteering is interesting.

Refresher: 80% of the results come from 20% of the effort. Another example, 80% of sales come from 20% of the sales team.

First thing in the morning, volunteered to be in a (new to the high school) parent focus group in the morning (90 minutes).

Mid-afternoon, volunteered to meet (and mentor) a former Disney Institute colleague (75 minutes).

Neither time total above includes travel time or preparation thinking time.

Something Magical happened between the two events. It’s at the ‘Next Blog’ hyperlink below…

Don’t let what we can’t do stop us from what we can

A ghost town.

Food For Families 2015 Easter deliveries
Ghost town.

Food For Families 2015 Easter deliveries
Some people did not answer their door.

In 40+ volunteer opportunities since 1999, we’ve never seen a ghost town turnout. It was eerie.

We saw four staff. We were the only car in line.

Normally dozens of cars and dozens of staff.

The staff filled our van with food boxes and off we went. The question came up, “Do we go back and do more?”

We did what we could do, which may not seem like a lot. And because it might not seem like a lot, there is always the temptation to not even bother in the first place.

Don’t let what we can’t do stop us from what we can.
